Pill Project - 1

Alex Norton is a photography student at Newport University, Gwent. He recently completed a project in Pillgwenlly (known to all as ‘Pill’) in which he documented the social work of Norman Parcelle, an ex-Newport County football player who now coaches 14-20 year olds. “The project’s based around football, but its not about football” says Alex. “Football holds these people together, whether through friendship or a career choice. But most of all, it’s about a positive future.”

Alex was invited to exhibit some of his photographs at the Pill Millennium Centre, in the heart of the community. To add to the edginess of his project, he handwrote his picture captions in a notebook, tore out the pages, and stuck them to the walls under the images. It was an effective result – and a good exhibition.
